I have the feeling I'm missing another cultural reference, here. Would someone please explain to me to me the significance of these creatures and why they're in my house, frightening my cats?

From what I've gathered... they're somehow related to an ancient god of destruction from an Earth-universe work of fiction. They may or may not be harbingers of doom, insanity and decimation. My roommate likes to keep them as pets.
