I have the feeling I'm missing another cultural reference, here. Would someone please explain to me to me the significance of these creatures and why they're in my house, frightening my cats?

They look sort of like malformed tadpoles which for some reason have two tails instead of one… Perhaps these are escaped specimens from whatever laboratory exists in this place?
