Reeve frowned, continuing to stroke her hair gently. "I'm sorry, love."

She shifted to nuzzle into his chest, not wanting to hear that odd silence from him anymore.

"What is it, love?" Not the curse, but... he knows there's something else.

She froze, silently cursing her transparency.

"... it's nothing, sweetheart. Really. It's fine. Midnight will be here soon and it'll all be fine."

"Anita..." But he doesn't push, even though he can hear the tension in her voice. Instead, he draws her in closer, nuzzling the shell of her ear. "I love you."

She sighed, then slowly pulled in his scent as she leaned in as close as she could with clothes on.

"I love you, too."

Anita wanted to just be able to open her mouth and say what she wanted to say, but she didn't want to hurt him. Not for anything and not after she'd already hurt him enough in the past.

Still, she couldn't help but let a few things tumble out of her mouth before her brain could stop her.

"Reeve... I hated being dead here, but... I think I hate you being dead even more."

"I... It's not that I love it myself, sweetheart." He sighed, hiding his face in her hair and nuzzling closer.

"I'm just afraid that if I come alive again they'll take me from you."

"... I know. I just hate seeing you like this since... you deserve life. I've never heard your heartbeat and I guess... I just wondered what it sounded like."

She pulled away a bit, leveling a look at him. "Reeve, the price is usually too high. Really, I'm just being silly."

He frowned and ran his thumb along her cheek.

"Anita, it bothers you. That's enough reason for me to change it."

"Not if the cost is too high. I know they took something from me and I know I miss it, but I still can't remember it and that drives me insane sometimes."

She reached up and curled her fingers around his wrist, nuzzling his hand.
